One really important thing to remember before you get HR involved in a
situation like this is that it is *NOT* HR's job to protect the interests
of employees. An HR department exists to protect the interests of the
*company*. If the course of action that best protects the company
happens to coincide with an employee's best interests, great. But it
often happens that an HR-devised solution leaves a bad taste in
everyone's mouth.
