I figured it out. When you insert a subdoc. Word asks if you want to rename
styles. Reinserting the subdoc and clicking [No to all] works.

I am working with a document that is already a master document so it would
be much work I would think to make it not a master document. Master
documents can be frustrating, but they are not impossible.
