It really does depend on several factors, such as what part of North
Carolina--Research Triangle tends to pay slightly higher, possibly because
they have more of a clue as to what good tech writers can do. Charlotte is
improving rapidly, primarily because of financial services and the influx of
IT support for them.

It also depends on the sector--IT, financial services, industrial, etc. My
rates have tended to be higher in financial services, but it hasn't always
been the case. I see postings for as little as $18 an hour, and as high as
$65, but both ends are rare. I would ball park it at $40-55 an hour in
Charlotte or Research Triangle (Raleigh), $30 - $40 in other areas. As
always, your mileage may vary.
