Conditional, side-by-side images work fine for me - *not* in columns,
just side by side. Each image is in a different character style, and the
template determines which style is hidden and which is not. When the
left-hand image's character style is hidden, the right-hand image
justifies itself leftward (according to the paragraph style). Does this
work for you?
