I think you are going to have to recognize that different users have
different ways of doing things.

1) Some people may have a separate external hard disk for back-ups of
critical information (I do).

2) Some people may have top-end memory sticks and choose to protect
portions on it (I've worked with people who did that)

3) Some people may have a way to save certain information to a network,
or via the Internet (not that I would recommend it, but some do...)


I think you would be best to advise your users to save and write-protect
the configuration file to some type of media NOT on their hard drive...
And give a clear warning that loss of the file could prevent them from
being able to return to that configuration in the event of damage to
their hard drive.
