Replacing "master" and "slave" terminology

This discussion reminds me of a lovely tech-writing chap I worked with years
ago in Chicago.

He objected to my references, in  hardware documentation, to male and female
connectors. He claimed not to understand the reference. Once I took into
consideration that he was gay, it dawned on me what the problem was.

"Male connectors plug into female connectors," I explained.

He gave me a look that said "Who made THAT silly rule?"
