I've often debated the same question (with myself). I think the issue comes down to how sophisticated and computer literate your readers are. If they are sophisticated, then the period shouldn't be a problem. If they are naive, however, then I think you make a good point. Since you want to
omit the period, I would put a colon before the url. Although not
technically grammatically correct, this approach will probably satisfy
those who prefer the period. For example...

Subject: Period at the end of a link or not?
We
are
writing
a
"Getting
Started
Guide".
There
are
a
couple
of
sentences
with
long
links:
i.e.,
to
download
XYZ,
you
can
do
it
from
here
(of
couse
we
don't
write
here
because
it
is
a
pdf
and
because
we
want
the
user
to
see
the
path
even
if
it
is
long).
My
colleague
thinks
it
should
have
a
period
at
the
end
of
the
link
to
make
it
a
sentence
and
to
be
grammatically
correct.
Is
this
truly
a
grammatical
sentence?
Here
is
an
example.
Period
or
no
period?
Sometimes
people
copy
and
paste
instead
of
clickng
the
link.
So
yes,
it
is
true,
it
is
a
PDF
and
not
everybody
has
a
way
to
copy
it
but
I
tend
to
think
that
a
period
at
the
end
of
a
path
is
an
extra
invitation
to
error.
What
is
your
opinion
regarding
the
issue.
