While most web hosts would never dream of taking a
client's domain hostage, it does happen. So the
recommended practice is to buy your domain name
(you.com) from a registrar and to buy your hosting
from a different company. This also makes it easier to
switch hosts quickly if the need arises.

If you're not happy with your domain registrar, you
can transfer your domain to another registrar, though
that's not immediate.
