Ditto Steve's comments. Also marketing companies are promoting blogs and
RSS feeds for boosting SEO--Search Engine Optimization--possibly the
latest, groovadelic buzzword in marketing circles. It applies to marketing
oneself for job searches, too.
A well-done, regularly updated professional blog can
- increase exposure of your online brand
- demonstrate your writing and presentation abilities
- RSS feeds can boost your online profile faster when updated
several times/week
- regularly "sharpen the saw"...or practice writing.
One blogger wrote that he would have a hard time writing a book because it
seemed like a huge, intimidating project. On the other hand, if he wrote
enough blog entries on a particular subject, he might have the core of a
book after a year or so...and relatively painlessly.

One of the best things about blogs is that search
engines like them provided that they get updated
regularly.
So a professional blog, either on or linked to your
professional web site, can be a good marketing tool.
