TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Patricia, in addition to the good ideas already posted, there are a number
of freelance services out there, and the one I use with good results is
guru.com. I paid a bit extra to get premium access to good projects (about
$100 a year). I get tons of leads with project descriptions, some with big
budgets, some with small, in all kinds of areas, magazine, web page, search
page optimization, indexing, design, proposal writing, brochure creation,
you name it. Lots of them are hardly worth a glance, but many of them are
solid, interesting and short-term and worth submitting a bid. With both
graphics and writing skills, you should be able to pick up some nice
projects. We've discussed these services from time to time on the list, so
check the archives for feedback on some of the others.
Hope this helps, and I wish you the best in overcoming the crunch.... been
there and it's scary, but you'll weather it!

Don't neglect your temp agency friends. They often have requests for
short-term part-time projects. A caveat -- these projects often really
need full-time effort, the client is just cheap.
Offer a special reduced rate to churches and not-for-profits.
Newsletters, grant proposals, brochures, correspondence, personnel
manuals are just a part of the possibility. Can you take good notes or
transcribe tapes? Anybody who has meetings could use minutes. It's a
great way to make contacts and if they like your work they will spread
the word.
