In 1972, two gentlemen from California named John Grinder and Richard Bandler modeled (a more elegant term than "chunked") the verbal constructs and methods of a number of therapists. Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir were fairly well-known at the time, as was Grinder and Bandler's primary focus--Milton Erickson. With a bit of Chomsky mixed in, their model of Erickson was presented in a work called, The Structure of Magic.

Erickson's use of language in therapeutic settings was complex, to say the least. In comparison, the "more complex, innovative products and applications" of contemporary widget making are conceptually impoverished.
