At a company I managed docs for about 10 years ago, there
was a brief debate about whether or not to require the use of
a dongle with our software. The issue was quickly resolved
when someone pointed out that every seat installed already
required an active connection to a $100,000 "dongle" (our
instrument system) in order to run.
