Hi Joel,
F9 updates fields -- tables of contents, indices, numbered lists,
cross-references, etc. What fields are you trying to update?
To see which text is produced by fields: Tools => Options => View tab =>
Field Shading => Always. Your field-based text is now highlighted in
gray.
To view the actual field codes, as opposed to the field-based text:
ALT+F9.
