Hello

I work in a company that produces tools to improve the quality of
geographical data. (www.1Spatial.com) We currently have 2 tech authors in
Cambridge UK. When a map is digitised the geometric shapes and location in
space are stored in a spatial database and then extracted and rendered by
viewing/printing software. The most common of these types of database is the
Oracle Spatial database which contains additional geometric datatypes and
spatial location information. Not really involved in the rendering side of
things.

I've been here a year and find it a fascinating industry!

Well, define "basic map data". Aerial/satellite imaging is a very
*small* subset of map data.
