I was born in Portland, and lived in or near there until my mid-20s. It
is a beautiful town. Maine's largest city, it had only a population of
70,000 while I was growing up -- probably a bit bigger these days. In my
day, Portland schools were adequate, but nearby communities -- South
Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Gorham were better. So that's a factor if you
have kids. While Bill is right, I believe, about there not being a slew
of companies that may need tech writers, there are some. Bath Iron Works
comes notably to mind as one I'd explore if moving back. The summers are
temperate and beautiful. Winters can be harsh, though no more so than
here in the Midwest and generally, thanks to the slower cooling of the
ocean, slightly warmer. The people are salt of the earth, by and large.
Historically conservative and reserved, don't be surprised if you go and
find slow going of making friends. If that happens, give it time,
continue being friendly, and prove yourself trustworthy. The rest will
take care of itself.
