Sorry, I missed the part about "thing being used". In that case, I'd
agree with Bonnie on "instruction plate". However, the term "plate" or
"placard" smacks of the medium on which the instructions are inscribed.
These terms also have a physicality which suggests a segment of the
machine surface reserved for user instructions.

On the other hand, "embedded help" is a broader concept referring to any
implementation of just-in-time information placed in the areas most
pertinent to the usage of that information. In other words, guidance
that the user doesn't have to go in search off while in the usage
environment. Admittedly, typical examples of this implementation are
more at home in software than in hardware.
