Are you considering work in the field? Writing samples are a good start. I
took a break from work for school and when I went back to work, all of my
samples were a little old, so I used some scholastic writing samples to show
that I could still write. 17 years ago, I really didn't have much in the
way of writing samples, but I could find documents that I prepared for work
or school that would show that I could write.

Writing ability is the first key, but workability probably plays as big of a
factor in whether to hire someone. Does the new writer understand the
environment, such as a government or technology environment? Will the new
writer be comfortable in the environment, like a faced-paced or confusing
environment? Is the interviewee personable, easy to talk to and understand,
compatible with the other employees? These are all factors to consider.

Good luck and enjoy,

Lauren
