While it is not uncommon that the end-user wants a single "big hunker" of a diagram, the result, as I think you previously pointed out, is a diagram that is often too difficult to maintain over the long run.

Not arguing that it can be done. However, in this case, the NOC wanted to see the flow through, from 5 to maybe 60 possible points, and have them all on one diagram. In this instance, it was necessary.

Keep in mind, also, that this was a printout (gotta love those ploters), not electronic, so there was no drill-down. Everything had to be on one layer.
