It seemed like this discussion was drifting toward the natural tendency
of language to change, so I did a quick search for new writings about
catechresis.

http://mroy.web.wesleyan.edu/webliteracy/linktropics.htm opens some
interesting ideas, and I think I'll read a bit more on this -- but on my
own time after I finish moving.

I am a strange person who spent a lot of Saturday nights in the library
with the Oxford English Dictionary (still do, sometimes). I don't just
write, I deeply love the tools involved with writing.
