This goes the way of Travel, Counsel, Total, Cancel, Index,

When the accent is on the first syllable, you need not double the final
consonant as you do generally when a two-syllable word has a
consonant-vowel-consonant pattern.(as in refer - referring, regress -
regressing)

HOWEVER different authorities will tell you differently. In most
dictionaries they tell you that either one is correct for most of these
words. (not Indexing of course)

Any O&G folks out there? I need help with modelling. Some here use one
'l' and some use two. The dictionary I use has both as correct. Anyone
decided on a standard?

(It's modeling as in reservoir modeling or thermal modelling.)
