It's an important distinction. As I understand it, "free software" is
any software which does not cost money, but "open source" is the
manufacturing process that anyone can see and, with a small commitment,
modify.

I view free, open-source software (FOSS) the same way I view wikipedia.
The method does not magically make it good, and the lack of leadership
often makes it quite bad. Like all things, the quality of the person
leading the software team is what makes the crucial difference.
