I remember a junior college chemistry prof who took the time to explain in detail how the benzene compounds in gasoline fumes were harmful with long-term exposure but not on an occasional, short-term basis. So it was safe to pump our own, but not to spend hours around the stuff every day. There was method to his madness -- he got our attention (several of us worked at gas stations) and introduced us very cleverly to the concept of electron exchange. I have always remembered his technique of using examples from a user's everyday life to help explain complicated technical material.
