Dan Goldstein raised an interesting possibility with his suggestion to discuss the situation with your current employer.

What would you risk by doing so? They'd throw a childish temper tantrum and cut you loose -- to earn more money with a shorter commute. Boo hoo.

What could you gain by doing so? Even if there's a conflict, proper management of the conflict could bring you closer with mutual respect and interest in continuing a relationship in the future.

Make the decision <to have the discussion with intent to reach a mutually-satisfactory consensus> cold sober. Start it with something like "Jack, something has come up and I need to talk to you before I make a decision." When everybody's agendas are out on the table and it's time for the digital decision <stay or go>, get drunk and flip a coin. Or go with the consensus. At that point it doesn't much matter; the goddess Communication has been served.

Don't abandon. Lots of people have deep and old abandonment wounds and you don't want to open them. And it ain't nice.
