Mary gives some good advice here. If I were working in tech support,
and wanted to move into technical writing, I would find an excuse to
write a document whether on company time or not, and then use that as
an excuse to write a few more. That makes it easier to show the next
company your abilities, because as Mary noted if the current company
doesn't "need" a technical writer it's unlikely they'll invent the
position.
