I typically spend about 9 to 9.5 hours in the office. By the time you
take away lunch, coffee breaks, sanity breaks, etc., I've usually put in
at around 8 hours for my employer on most days. That said, I'll work
overtime as needed. If possible, I prefer to take it home and work on it
after the kids are in bed so I can spend the evening with my family.

At a job I once interviewed for, they stated that they expected everyone
to work 50-hour weeks, while the pay they offered was at best average
for the area. I didn't pursue that job when there were other companies
out there who treated their employees better and managed projects much
more efficiently. I agree with Chris; MOST people do not function well
working extreme hours for extended periods of time, but as always, YMMV.

How many times do you hear about someone on their deathbed saying, "I
wish I would have worked more hours for the company?"

I love my job, I get tremendous satisfaction from it, and work with some
really great people. But I also have a life and family outside of the
company. To put it simply:

I work to live, not live to work.

Diminishing returns are generally seen in quality of product, and I'm
not sure this applies to whatever you do after hours. At a day job,
however, 80-90 hour weeks (in my experience) generally lead to burnout
and management taking advantage of the situation to avoid planning for
efficiency.
