I have done the requisite web searching, Microsoft-Universe-trolling, and hair-pulling, and I now turn to my trusty colleagues for help.

I am trying to make a simple cross-reference, as follows:

See Appendix A on page 57 for more information.

I use Word's autonumbering for chapters and appendixes in these small documents. The autonumbering style I've chosen inserts a colon, as in Appendix A: Having Fun with Matches

As you will already have observed, my tricksy spirits, my cross-reference does not include the colon. It shouldn't.

However, unfortunately, I cannot figure out a way to get MS Word to omit the colon. What I actually get in my cross-references is:

See Appendix A: on page 57 for more information.

I have tried two solutions:

1. I thought I could then cross-ref to the A alone, and supply the rest as text. After all, all I want is for the apx ref to be correct if the # or placement of apxs changes. So, I tried to select just the A, not the colon, and bookmark it. Nothing doing. I had to select the colon along with the A, which didn't do me any good.

2. I created a custom autonumber for the appendixes, omitting the colon. I thought I could then insert the colon manually in the appendix heads, but the cross-reference feature would not pick up the manually inserted colon. No luck. I could not insert the colon after the A and before the tab that precedes the heading text.

I will use the SEQ field to create an appendix numbring sequence if that's the only solution, but does anyone have a simpler method? Am I missing something glaringly obvious?
