I'm relatively new to the list, and I felt compelled to respond to this
thread.

I believe that ultimately it comes down to whether you're being asked to
assist in certain functions because you are believed to have the best skills
for that job or whether you're being asked because the people asking simply
don't get what your skills are.

I've had colleagues who have been asked to take notes because they were in
early design meetings and, well, the tech writing stuff doesn't come until
much later, so it's not like she really had anything else to do, right?

On the other hand, I've been asked to help QA specifically for user
interface issues because the QA people asking knew that was my area of
interest.

It's a matter of people in your organization considering what you do to have
value.
