As the other responses indicate, use Master Documents only at your
peril. It isn't ready for production level work. It isn't even ready
for hobby level.
Microsoft threw this feature in and has never revisited it. It isn't
a feature that is in high demand by the mass of the Word user base.
Face it, most Word users format their document by word, line and
paragraph. Most don't understand the paragraph and character tags.
Bottom line, Word's Master Document feature requires a rigid
methodology to work, with no exceptions allowed. Therefore, it isn't
useful in our line of work.
