from my narrow software worldview, 

unit test -  the person who created this thing believes it functions
in and of itself as specified.  No assertions beyond that whatsoever.

as opposed to integrated testing, system testing, regression testing,
quality testing, user acceptance testing, having the stuffing beaten
out of it by the documentation and training folks, etc....
