TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
There are exceptions to any generalization. And I think it's logically
true that naming a few does not disprove a generalization.
Also, it seems to me that for every writer whose work is potentially
life-threatening or bank-breaking there are dozen whose worst downside
is a puzzled user, or marginally lower productivity. Certainly that's
true of my work. The worst possible downside is that some poor schmuck
will read it, waste some not all that precious time, and eventually
figure out that I wrote the help wrong.
Those are the facts of my situation. They don't imply that I am not
proud of my work, good at it, or willing and able to demand a fairly
high price for it.
In your specific case, Gene, I won't worry. I've seen with my own eyes
how little auto mechanics rely on the documentation to do their jobs,
and I'll bet the same is true of aircraft mechanics.
