Several respondents have already said that, if all
else fits, this can give you a second career path.
I'll call you and raise you one: it might, just might,
open up big doors for you one day. When the company
needs a new VP to combine several departments, it's a
lot easier to imagine promoting someone who has
multiple skill sets than someone who is perhaps even
better in one, but only has that one.

I've seen this happen.
