In my first position, documentation was part of the QA dept...it was called
"The QA and Documentation Department"...and when I was not writing, I was
QAing (is that a word?). In my present position, I have helped out with QA,
and when I first came on there was not a QA person, and I did QA in between
my writing...I still help out with it sometimes and help out a lot with the
QA documentation (test plans etc). I find it to be beneficial, as I often
find and learn things during QA, that help or even correct my manuals.
As for salary, both places paid the QA members the same as the technical
writers, and I make a good salary. However, you do have to stay on top of
managers as far as priority and time goes...but that tends to be an issue
for me when I am not doing QA work. :)
Good luck!
Melissa
