Why not just use the definite article and eliminate the
whole issue? I don't see any grammatical or semantic
reason why the indefinite article is necessary in most
similar situations. There is a finite number of filename
extensions and each one is specific if not unique, so
"the .aaa extension" seems appropriate usage to me.

I'm wondering which of these is correct:

"[...] with a .aaa file extension"

or

"[...] with an .aaa file extension"

The question really is about how the extension is read. Is the dot read
in your head as the word "dot," or is it just glossed over/implied?
