TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I eat lunch in the cafeteria rather than in the "office people's lounge" or at my desk. I start conversations around topics such as "How could we make your life easier with better instructions and forms that are easier to fill out?" Not all the time -- we started with "what crazy thing did _your_ kids do last weekend?"
The same people who give a shrug and "I dunno" when I'm wearing my QC lab coat and hair net are delighted to have somebody listen to their ideas away from the noise and chaos of the production floor. They spill their brains and are even more willing to talk to me when I'm in my official "PPE" garb because we've broken the ice.
Breaking bread and sharing salt together is pretty lo-tech, but it's been effective.
