TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Congratulations on making what sounds like a relatively soft landing
(or at least, a quick one).
Balancing job satisfasction vs. compensation is a big achievement.
I've left companies for new positions that paid less (and without
being RIF'ed!) and have never regretted it. And don't underestimate
the value of the leisure time saved by the shorter commute as well as
the gas. Five hours a week at your hourly rate adds up to a nice
chunk of change, as long as you can still afford to pay the bills.
