I use VNC at home to share PCs on my network. You can set passwords, so
it's completely safe. It's slow, though, and it lags terribly with
video, so I don't recommend it for everything. At the very least, I
would expect slow results. I can't imagine working from home through
VNC, but it's not a bad emergency solution. All you need is the app
installed on both machines, and the IP addresses of your target machine.
It's possible to install your apps at home, but keep your files on your
office network. In this case, you want a VPN solution. I would suggest
talking with your Tech Support.
There are other solutions, but this is my experience...

Subject: Remote desktop sharing, anyone?
Hello,
Does anyone have any recommendations for remote desktop sharing?
Lag issues?
Security issues?
Does distance actually matter for response time?
I'm going to be using Madcap Flare, Captivate, Articulate and a few
other
tools to document some non web-based applications. It sure would be
easier
and (hopefully) more secure if I could leave the physical commodities in
the
office where they belong, 6,000 miles away.
Thanks,
Jeff Scattini
