Hi,

You may find this thread helpful:
https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1539656&SiteID=1.

Also, reference material for the languages should also have the info. Note
that in the thread above they are talking more about the Help menu and
buttons than What's This help. What's This help (at least as it was done in
the WinHelp days) is being phased out by MS. HTMLHelp never supported it
well.

That said, here's another couple of articles you may find interesting:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315988

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/t419bf97(VS.71).aspx

Also, some that seem to focus more on the type of Help I think you are
concentrating on:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/189086

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wf4zyth3(VS.71).aspx

Hope that helps.

Susan

Hi,

You wrote: <<Do you know which language and tool is involved?>>

One software application I work with is .NET, another is Visual Basic.
Not sure about the tool used to program.

For the Visual Basic application, our programmers merely type the
appropriate Map ID number into a text box. That alone is apparently
sufficient to call up the correct help topic. The magic that makes this
happen is unknown to me, hence my question!

I've done this in Visual Basic (loooooooong time ago) and have read
about it in C++. From what I remember it depends on the computer
language you are using. Also, the tool used to program can make a
difference. For example, it can be rather point and clink in many
current software development programs.

Do you know which language and tool is involved?

This is a rather technical question, but I'd be curious if anyone knows
the answer(perhaps everyone does except me).... Assume your company
produces a software application:

* Your application is configured for context-sensitive help. For
example, if you click in the Address test box and press F1, a help topic
(Address.htm) opens which explains that text box.

* This is controlled by a Map ID number. For example, Map ID No. 567 may
be assigned to Address.htm.

Here's my question:

* When you press F1 in the Address text box, what is the exact sequence
of events that leads to Address.htm being opened?

* In other words, in the application, the Address text box is associated
with Map ID No. 567. In the help system, Address.htm is associated with
Map ID No. 567. But what REALLY occurs to make Address.htm open?

Perhaps this is really a programming question. Purely academic curiosity
motivates me here... Thanks!

Keith
