TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'd suggest if your localization vendor has a problem with the common usage
of a term, it's time to seek a more qualified localization vendor. If you
were using machine translation, I could understand adopting a "single use
for all terms" approach but real translators ought to be able to read a
sentence and understand easily from context that I'm not talking about LCD
or CRT displays. As far as I'm concerned, any translator who expresses
difficulty with something as easy as this is incompetent.
