TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'm *so* glad we're having this conversation again. Is that Andrew Plato
I hear laughing in the background?
John put his finger on the crux of this well-worn thread. There's a huge
range of technical knowledge required of technical writers -- not only
depth, but also breadth. Some jobs require little knowledge, some
require extensive knowledge in a very specific field, and some require
the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge in a variety of areas.
Many of us could never get hired for John's job, and John could never
get hired for many of ours.
There's a >10X vertical range of technical knowledge required for our
jobs, and probably a >100X horizontal range. But the range of
communication knowledge required just _isn't that big_. Someone with
only a tenth of John's communication skills shouldn't get hired
*anywhere* (yes, I know they do), and there's no one with ten times
John's communication skills.
Happy Thursday,
Dan
