Normally I agree with every word out of Gene's keyboard, since Gene is even
more thoughtful and practical than I am. (... make the cheque out to...)

This one, however, I think I disagree.

Maybe it's been so long that Gene forgets what it was like.

If you've never done it, you don't really know if you want to be doing it.
The only way to find out is to jump in with both feet, grasp every resource
that's available, and make the best of it. That's how people grow.

Could I have a show of hands from people who are technical writers today,
and who gave that answer in Grade Six when asked: "... and what do you want
to be?"

It's a process. Opportunities are all around us, coming and going. We
recognize them when we're ready for them... or sometimes when our friends
recognize for us and give us a nudge. :-)

It took me forever to learn the secret of life that some people seem to know
coming out of the womb: attitude is everything.

Kevin
