Now there's an assumption. I have worked a few places where managers do not
earn the salary of the people doing the work and where the office may be
larger than an employee office, but it is not always a better space. And
other perks seem to coincide with personal sacrifices.

What follows are salary comparisons (from salary.com) for Beverly Hills that
show that management does not always lead to better pay. You can see that
the low range of a high-level technical writer is higher than the low range
for a manager. Towards the higher range, the manager fares slightly better,
but frequently managers make sacrifices in time outside of work and in
overtime compensation that most technical writers do not. Deciding to enter
management can be difficult for people that do not want to make the
sacrifices that the job requires. Pay does not seem to help make the
decision easier.
