I guess my point is that there is a difference between material
designed for presentation in class and material designed for video
where the student can't ask questions. If technical writers pushed
themselves into this field it would go a long way into improving
education. Naturally, I don't expect any individual technical writer
to go and convince any individual professor to let them take over
their instructional design. What I suggest, however, is that the STC
get involved in collaborating with instructional design and CBT
researchers and attempt to influence the fields at the cutting edge.
Kind of like leading a swarm of bees by attracting the queen with just
the right scent. I don't know if educators will enjoy being compared
to bees but they do both work very hard for little pay.
