Here is what I did when I was working with the DEA, and leading the effort
to develop a formatting/style guide.

I found a suggestion on the web to do this.

Set Heading 7 to be << "APPENDIX" space "number" >> That is done when you
set up the information for Heading Level 7.
Set the equivalent Heading level (for the TOC as a Level 1 head.

Set the Numbering to be A, B, C, etc

You can do it in the Format > Style set of screens

It helps if you have also set your document to have "Section Breaks" for the
Chapters/Sections of your Document. These would be 'numbered' - 1, 2, 3,
etc., or I, II, III, IV, etc., depending on your 'corporate' formatting/style
guide
