You do need to consider the context of the post to select
the meaning that applies. Just because the original meaning
may not be today's most common one doesn't make it invalid.
The situation as described is one manager's apparent dislike
for Anthony resulting in his termination even though he
previously had a good record and rep with the company
and nobody within the company apparently having any
desire to object to the termination. In the absence of any
mention of Anthony having problems getting a job elsewhere,
the original meaning is valid and clearly the only one that can
be applied to Anthony's post.
The poor guy just lost his job, there's no reason to poke
him about his choice of words when the one he used is
perfectly correct, is there?
It's true that the term derives from the ancient practice of vetoing
someone's membership in a fraternity or club by putting a black ball --
negative vote -- in the ballot box. But that's not the only meaning, not
the most current meaning, and not the meaning it commonly has in a
