Searching for the simple "Avoid starting sentences
with it" will find you plenty of sources that advise
avoiding this construction when the referent is not
clear. However, most guides are not going to advise
writers to completely cut out this construction because
you don't want to solve one problem by creating another,
which is the redundant repetition of noun phrases.
