Not really advice or experience, but I came across this site:
http://www.yawcpro.com/ in DocBook-related meanderings a while ago.
Never tried their product, so can't put in a plug for it.. and it may
be a bit pricey for one-time use, at $220 a license... but it may be
worth investigating if you're looking for a Word-to-XML converter.
