There's so much insight in this post it's hard to know
where to start.

Mailing lists are by their very nature not persistent.
The archives can be searched, but old topics do not
get resurrected because only one message can be viewed
at a time.

A forum is somewhere between a Wiki/blog and a mailing
list. It is both discussion and a repository for
information, and an admin can cull "dead" replies of
no value (or delete the "Pet Peeves" thread).
