I'm wondering if this is a regional thing. Everyone I know uses XML and as I said, my old writing group started using it in June of 2000. I was writing online HTML and scripting tutorials in 1996 so that's already 11 years ago.

Sort of. It emerged at a time when most people were
just mastering the HTML, script, database connection,
and so got a bit forgotten, and it's only recently
we've seen it widely used.
