I find "male" and "female"...not offensive, I guess, but definitely kind
of tacky - industry standard or not. I don't think they color my
opinion of the product/documentation in question, but they do frequently
trigger an eyeroll at the horny geekboys [*] who thought it was good
terminology in the first place.
The Microsoft Manual of Style says not to use them and provides
substitutes, which I don't remember offhand. I suppose I'd use those
substitutes if I documented hardware, which I don't.
