For those still considering adopting DocBook, another reaonable approach may
be to look at Simplified DocBook--then to add a few elements from DocBook
itself to allow for books, since the simplified form has as its largest
element articles.
The result would still be a completely valid DocBook instance, but many of
the overlapping elements and thus much of the ambiguity would be gone.
FYI, Simplified DocBook has 119 elements, 555 entities, and 29 notations.
Adding a limited number of elements for books, and you may still have a much
more manageable DTD.
The result is that the many tools available that work with DocBook would
still be available to you without modification, for the most part.
